Malbec: France vs Argentina
While Malbec has a long and venerable history in France's Cahors region, with the first vines being planted in the area around 50 BC, the varietal is used mostly as a blending grape in other areas of France: particularly Bordeaux and occasionally in the Loire Valley. Here the grape is known for its inky purple color, and deep dark fruit.
A very different story unfolds in Argentina. Although the varietal was introduced from France in the mid-nineteenth century, Malbec only came into its own as an Argentine powerhouse in the late 20th century, when the grape's potential was realized and focus shifted to premium wine production for export. And thank goodness for that!
